I live about 20 minutes away and would like to point out that another distinct advantage to having a festival in this part of New England is the wonderful pristine lakes that are nearby....Thompson, Pleasant and Pennesseewassee all have great public beaches and wonderful clean water. Check 'em out ! Pleasant is the furthest of the three but is seriously the cleanest clearest lake I have ever been in ! I stood shoulder deep in it late one night and could clearly see the bottom from just the moonlight

Awesome! About how far are these said lakes from the fairgrounds?

The closest is Thompson Lake...the northern tip in Oxford is where the public beach is...just a 2 miles away. Hopefully there will be no local BS in place to prevent "non-residents" from swimming. Some lakes in Maine do that. Just two miles in the opposite direction..in Norway..is the public beach on Pennesseewassee (seriously - that is how it is spelled !) Furthest..but my favorite..is Pleasant Lake. You have to go to Casco which is on the southern end of the lake..about a 30 minute drive. But likely much less crowded. Well, until now I suppose

The Town beach in Oxford will definitely be closed to non residents.

GREAT thread. Lakes are southwest Maine's greatest asset (imho), and it would be a shame for people from away to miss out.
Does anyone know if we'll be able to get our cars out of on-site once we enter? If so, I'll definitely be doing a late-morning lake outing on Saturday and Sunday and would be happy to bring others along-

I'm pretty sure that once you're on site, you are there for the duration. No coming and going. Your best bet might be to pool your resources with some others who are looking to swim and grab a cab ride. Or I think I've read here that you can leave your car at the Speedway, that way you can 'escape' if need be.

Thanks for the Pleasant Lake suggestion. It was perfect before our long car ride home!

Lake Pennesseewasse was great. Went there and paid a local family 5 bucks per person to shuttle us there.....well worth it. So beautiful

Stopped for a swim at Highland Lake Park in Bridgton, Maine. It was super refreshing and nice and clean (except for the glass some dude cut his foot on in the water).

I didn't catch wind of folks swimming in the river behind Hannafords/Pizza Slut till late on the last day. I guess getting down to it was a bit tricky and the water was a tad on the warm side, but it sure would have felt good to soak those parts of my dusty body that I couldn't get under the spigot!LOL

I, too, learned of the river Sunday afternoon. But the guy who was just returning from it said it was cold! If I had known sooner, I probably would have made the venture down with my daughter to cool off.
