It is with a heavy heart, and a great sadness that we cancel the 2011 Nateva Music & Camping Festival. After an epic inaugural year, we have found ourselves struggling at every turn as we have tried to push forward with preparations for this summer.
The challenges in assembling our lineup of bands, a lack of certain venue permits, a very crowded summer festival schedule and slower than predicted ticket sales have all contributed to our decision to cancel Nateva this summer. In the end, it's all about being able to put forth a first rate event that everyone can be proud of and that our customers can enjoy. We just don't have the confidence to go forward at this time.
Refunds in the amount of the ticket face value and per-ticket fees for tickets already purchased will be processed via the credit card that you made your purchase with. You can expect to see this refund reflected on your next statement, depending upon your billing cycle. Any questions regarding refunds may be sent to info@natevafestival.com.
We are very grateful to the People of Maine, the Oxford Fairgrounds, our Customers, our Bands, and our wonderful Staff, and we just want to say, "Thank You" for all of your support. We look forward to seeing you out and about wherever there is great live music.
Sincerely, Nateva Festival

As much as I would like to hope this is just an April Fools joke I don't think it is. I was planning on making my second trek to Oxford this summer. Hopefully I'm wrong but I think this is legit

Just got this confirmed from the official folks over at Nateva. If I hear anything about future plans I'll let everyone know asap. I'll post more when I'm at a computer and not on my phone

Why announce this on April Fools?
It's either a stupid joke or a dumb day to make this announcement...Couldn't wait one more day or announce this one day earlier?

Why announce this on April Fools? It's either a stupid joke or a dumb day to make this announcement...Couldn't wait one more day or announce this one day earlier? My guess is they had a set deadline to decide weather or not they could go forward with plans or call it off, "April Fools" having nothing to do with it, and wanted to make the announcement immediately to avoid "rumors and speculation" which run rampant on the web.

This is so incredibly sad. first Up North, and now an even bigger loss, Nateva. Is Maine cursed when it comes to festivals? I hate to be the one to say "I told you so", but I did. I was criticized for being too negative by guys like ITRAINMONKEYS, but I could smell something wrong from the first announcements this year. Frank said that he expected to lose money last year, but not as much as he did. So he tried to do the festival this year on the cheap. People are not going to come from Denmark (the country, not the town in Maine), or California, or even New York, to see Gregg Allman. The Allman Brothers? Yeah. Gregg? Not likely. Frank is right, the competition is intense in the festie market right now. Knowing that, why would you put forth a marginal band lineup and expect to compete? It ain't gonna work. One of the reasons cited was the supposed inconvenience of the off site camping and parking. Inconvenient for whom? I thought the setup was great. It was a very slick operation. It also enabled Frank to have the number of people that he needed to make the festival a major draw by having a great band lineup. So why drop that key element? Because it was expensive? Probably, but necessary. Without that option, the rest does not work. I said that it was impossible to accommodate the campers and commuters in the space available at the Fairgrounds. I was right. Then Frank announced that he was scaling back the number of people allowed at the fest site. That is when it all was exposed. The band list would have to be tier 2 because he would not have the ticket numbers necessary to support last year's quality bands. Deal over. As some of you may know from previous posts, I am an auto racing fan as well as a music fan, and I have seen this scenario in racing so often that it is a ho-hum event. You have a successful businessman who has a passion for racing. He now has a large amount of disposable income. So he decides to start a race team. Any race fan who is more than a casual observer knows that owning a race team is one of the fastest ways to burn disposable income. So these guys, who are used to making money, not losing it, suddenly discover that they are losing massive amounts of money. They should have known that would happen, because unless you are committed to losing money for a long time, you will not succeed in racing. It takes time to establish a team, and sponsors, and a fan base, etc. These rich guys that start teams and lose money fast bail out of their deals just as fast. They simply are not committed to the long haul. Well, the same thing is true in the case of Nateva. You have to know that you will lose a s***load of money for a few years until you are an "established" festival. Once you are at that stage, then the bands want to play your fest, the fans want to come, and the money thing will work itself out. Good faith is a key element of this. Frank delivered the goods last year (security issues aside) and for that, he is to be commended. For a first year festival, one could overlook some of the glitches. But to then turn around and burn the good faith that year 1 generated by trying to do this thing in penny pinching mode is not acceptable. And the fans spoke with their wallets, as one would expect. You know, if I won the lottery in a big way, I would do this festival in a heartbeat. But I would do it knowing that I was pouring money down a hole. I would be OK with that because the joy that I would experience from watching the happiness of the concertgoers is priceless. That is probably why I am not a successful millionaire businessman. Oh well. You know, I am kind of an old fart, although not as old as the remaining Dead guys, but I have developed a level of cynicism that is age appropriate. I have been around. That doesn't mean that I don't care. This announcement hurts me a lot. Yeah, I suspected it was coming. That doesn't make it any less painful. Hopefully someone else with the vision and money necessary to pull this kind of venture off will come forward. In the meantime, I will miss the Nateva community greatly. Even ITRAINMOKEYS, who called me a liar on repeated occasions. I was really looking forward to meeting him. Now I will just have to read his posts on INFOROO. Now I will go drown in my beer, except it is actually Mount Gay rum and Pepsi. Take care all. I will miss you.

Interesting and insightful p.o.v. on matt's account... I'll be going to Mnt. Jam and now that Nateva's dead, perhaps the Gathering for the first time... Should be fun, but it def hurts that Nateva choked itself out like this... As a small upstart, for all of us on here it was kind of "our" festival.
